September blew right by. Still, I've made progress on projects and gotten out of the house once or twice.
Air show
I've gone out to shoot photos of the
Blue Angels a couple of times, but I've never actually been to the Miramar Air Show itself. There are grandstands and tents and picnic blanket viewing areas all along the runway where the performances happen. Behind those are vendor booths and food and parked aircraft.
We caught the tail end of the Marine demonstration, but it looked awesome - explosions and F-18s and helicopters carrying vehicles and artillery. In contrast to the aerobatics that I typically associate with an air show, this had the appearance of an action film.
Family chalet
The kids tent had creative activities and friendly staff. Shade, water, and chicken tenders were a huge bonus.
F-22
The Raptor demo was my first opportunity to see all those
neat fifth gen fighter maneuvers live.
F-35
The Lightning demo was kind of like the F-22 one but the maneuvers looked different enough to be awesome to watch. And since it was a -B variant,
the F-35 ended its demonstration with a long hover and vertical landing.
Another roll
Me and J had a great time with
Katamari Damacy two decades ago. I tried the re-release with Dani, it totally holds up and the control scheme is pretty good for a three year old.
Tech tidbits

You're right, Copilot, I am awesome. |
Microsoft has integrated Copilot with its office products, using a
RAG or something functionally similar. This new, more powerful Clippy is a great way to
find out what a chatbot thinks of your coworkers. Relatedly, the new tool has taken a lot of the pain and work out of annual reviews.
Unrelatedly,
Rob pointed me to a
HN post linking to a good writeup on blogging.
Deck railing
For the upper portion of the deck,
all that's left is the railing grasp and some trim. I wanted to screw the grasp in from the bottom so the stop stays clean, but wasn't sure how to best affix it to the posts. Hayik suggested a steel or aluminum T- or L-bracket that was readily available at the metal supply store.
Beer exploration
The
GBES outing this month was to
AleSchmidt, the AleSmith oktoberfest event. Their oktoberfest beer was excellent and the live music and food trucks made for a fun family outing.
